Ramos Apartments

This residential building features four distinct staircases, with two apartments per floor across four levels—the top floor being a later addition to the original three-story design. Spanning front and rear facades, the apartments are arranged around internal courtyards, incorporating a hallmark of Spanish architecture that is exceptionally rare in China. Beyond its unique layout, the site holds notable historical importance as a former home of the renowned Chinese writer Lu Xun, making it a popular cultural landmark today.

The project is documented by this "Research Project" through original archival blueprints drafted and signed by Lafuente, Ramos & a Chinese builder (dated December 1923 and March 1924), including seven structural plans, a site location plan, two elevations with a typical section, and two typical floor plans.

According to the original floor plans, each residence opens from the main staircase hall into a front drawing room and two bedrooms (one with a fireplace). A central corridor leads to the dining room—featuring a second fireplace, direct bathroom access, and natural light from the central court. A dedicated rear staircase provides service access to the kitchen, pantry, and servants' quarters.
