The type of work he did on this hotel is unknown, although it is assumed to be interior design, he never did a new building for this hotel company while working for a decade. The reason why Hong Kong & Shanghai Hotels Ltd. (HSH) never allowed him to build was because of his nationality. Help us find records of their works!
The most relevant information found in the media about this project is in "The China Press" on May, 9 1926 in an article titled "Familiar Old Landmark is doomed: Kiukiang Road Looming as Great Banking Center with Kalee Hotel Sale.
Would like to highlight the following information:
"The building was erected years ago for Mr. Sheng Kung Pao and leased to Mrs. Clark who conducted there a private hotel successfully for many years. Then, an American Company was incorporated and conducted the business until the expiration of the lease in 1924. Then Mr Edward Ezra acquired the building for the HSH and it became more of a home for permanent residents than a hotel for transient guests, and many old shanghailanders, especially residents of the hotel itself, will regret the demolishing of this old home with its many pleasant memories. But the building had to go towards the extension and the erection of a new Kiukiang Road widening project. At the same street, China Realty Co had several properties and all of them had to agree to the modification of the street by giving away some part of their plots."
